Casino de Paris poster: Mistinguett with parrot
Mistinguett (5 April 1875 – 5 January 1956) was a French actress and singer, whose birth name was Jeanne Bourgeois. She was at one time the best-paid female entertainer in the world. She inspired a fashion for long headresses and gowns, which became a staple of French music hall.
Jeanne Bourgeois made her debut as Mistinguett at the Casino de Paris in 1895, and appeared also in shows as the Folies Bergère, Moulin Rouge, and Eldorado.

James Northfield (1887 - 1973) was one of the most celebrated commercial artists of the 20th century in Australia. He was recognised for his sound draughtsmanship, his excellent composition and the remarkable atmosphere of light and colour with which he captured the quality of the Australian landscape. His work appeared in billboard advertisements, promotional travel posters and posters relating to World Wars I and II.

Dame Eileen Rosemary Mayo, RA, DBE (1906-1994) was an English-born artist and designer who worked in England, Australia and New Zealand in almost every available medium - drawings, woodcuts, lithographs on stone and tempera, tapestry and silk screening. In addition to being a printmaker, illustrator, calligrapher and muralist, she designed coins, stamps, tapestry and posters, and wrote and illustrated eight books on natural science.

Jardin du Perroquet Side Walk Cafe
Designed by Emery Roth and completed in 1926, the building had a very large and very elegant lobby with a long, wide corridor with carved plaster ceiling and marble mosaic panels set into pilasters. The first floor contained a very large dining room that originally was designed in Pompeian style with a sunken garden. Over the years, this room was converted for catering and often was used for wedding parties. The 9th Street corner was converted for restaurant use and subsequently expanded into an enclosed sidewalk cafe.

Self-taught, the Italian Cappiello was originally a caricaturist who became the most significant European artist of the early 20th century by masterfully linking products with strikingly colored, contemporary, memorable images. In 40 years he created 1,000 works, including innovative posters for beverages, ballet, literature, plays, travel and music halls. Cappiello led the Art Deco movement, and set standards which are still fundamental to today’s advertising.

Dean Cornwell (March 5, 1892 - December 4, 1960) was an American illustrator and muralist. His oil paintings were frequently featured in popular magazines and books as literary illustrations, advertisements, and posters promoting the war effort. Throughout the first half of the 20th century he was a dominant presence in American illustration. At the peak of his popularity he was nicknamed the "Dean of Illustrators".

Beautiful Woman Promoting the Banana Republic.
Although there is some discrepancy as to whether Dean Cornwell was born in New York City or Louisville, Kentucky, there is no questioning his impact on the art world of the 20th century. Best known for his outstanding murals in England, executing works for the Players Club and Chelsea Arts Club, and the United States, with projects including the Los Angeles Public Library and the Lincoln Memorial in Redlands, California, he also worked as a WPA designer and illustrator. Here we are treated to a work of his focusing on the promotion of the Banana Republic. Choosing to focus on the tropic splendor of the land from which the luscious fruit springs (although there is a nod to the hard laboring workers), an exotic, earthy beauty, who puts the Chiquita lady to shame, displays a basket of fruit featuring the tempting banana as she is surrounded by the splendor of the tropical rain forest, replete with parrots and toucans.

Radiola Vintage Posters
In the 1950s, a radio gramophone became a living room fixture, at least in middle class homes. Svenska Radioaktiebolag (SRA), owned by the Swedish company Ericsson, manufactured models in various sizes, from small table units to large floor models. The floor models were designed as furniture, making them a central feature in homes of the 1950s.
The invention of the transistor changed the technology in the radio industry. Vacuum tubes could be eliminated, and when mass production of transistors began, radios could be made both smaller and less expensive. The first transistor radio in the Radiola series was launched in 1958, and became very popular in Sweden.

Eptinger Vintage Parrot Posters
All these vintage posters were made by Herbert Leupin (1916-1999) for the Swiss company Eptinger.
Herbert Leupin started as independant freelance graphic designer in 1938 and soon became one of the most important poster artists in Switzerland. In the late ´30s, his style was illustrative but soon, he became famous for his innovative humorous figures and his fresh and colourful style. His best posters tell small stories and translate the company‘s name into a picture. His innovative Object Posters for companies like Eptinger, Bata, Knie, Coca Cola and various publishers became world-famous and today some of them are rare collective items.
In many ways, Herbert Leupin was the leading figure in poster design in the fifties. Due to his wide range of styles and his creative humour, even his contemporaries saw him as one of the best graphic artist of the time. For some of the several hundred posters he created, he received important awards in Germany, Switzerland and the US such as the Medal Award of Art Directors Club in Chicago in 1960.

Ghirardelli Chocolate
The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company is a United States division of Swiss candymaker Lindt & Sprüngli. The company was founded by and is named after Italian chocolatier Domingo Ghirardelli, who, after working in South America, moved to California. The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company was incorporated in 1852, and is the second-oldest chocolate company in the United States, after Baker's Chocolate.

How to Pronounce Ghirardelli?!
The correct spelling and pronunciation of the Italian name "Ghirardelli" has long stumped even the most avid consumers of Ghirardelli Chocolate. Domingo Ghirardelli, the founder of Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, must have resigned himself to the fact that only by a miracle was anybody going to get his name right: the original name of the chocolate company when it opened for business in 1852 was "Ghirardely & Girard."
The spelling of the name Ghirardelli may have been an early attempt to indicate the correct pronunciation.
Throughout its early history, the company has had to cope with all this and even incorporated it into early packaging labels and advertising campaigns.
For many years, a bright colored parrot and the words, "Say Gear-ar-delly" (a phonetic spelling of the name) were used to help solve the pronunciation problem. The strategy proved to be very successful.

Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic
The Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic, or STP, is an annual one- and two-day supported bicycle ride from Seattle, Washington to Portland, Oregon in the United States. The STP "is considered one of the 10 biggest recreational bicycle rides in the country, drawing riders from across the nation and from other nations", and has been operating for more than 25 years. The ride is organized by the Cascade Bicycle Club. It is approximately 200 miles (322 km) in length. Most riders complete the distance in two days; however, about 15% complete the ride in one day.
The first STP took place in 1979 and was a race. The ride has taken place every year since except in 1980 when it was canceled because of the eruption of Mount St. Helens.
