The Corso of Zundert is the biggest Corso (flower parade) in the world. All the work is done voluntarily. Twenty heralds compete against each other to build the most beautiful float, judged by a professional jury. It has been done so for over eighty years.

YOU’RE TERRIBLE MURIEL!

Ivan Lovatt is a regular at SWELL and his pieces are easily recognisable. They are made of wire netting and really are works of art. Every year I marvel at his skill and this year was no exception. His giant Galah, complete with timber perch, is so iconically Australian. As is the reference to that wonderful Toni Collette movie – Muriel’s Wedding. The sculpture was made to commemorate his own little bird ‘Muriel’ who bought much joy to his family.

Hubcap Creatures parrot sculptures

"Hubcap creatures are made entirely from recycled and upcycled materials. All the hubcaps are found, usually on the side of the road, and therefore bear the scars of their previous lives in the form of scratches and abrasions. I believe these marks add texture and history to the creatures they decorate."

Parrot Head "Rubio" by Bernard Reynolds

Description: The sculpture develops the parrot's skull with its characteristic beak into a more abstract and menacing mask.

Description (iconographical): The sculpture was commissioned for the newly created Sculpture Garden above Castle Mall Shopping Centre by the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society in consultation with the garden's designer Georgina Livingston after it was decided that a commission to Peter Logan would be too easy to vandalise. Bernard Reynolds developed the sculpture from an earlier smaller series of Parrot Head sculptures. These were based on Reynolds's drawing of c. 1952 after the skull of Rubio - a macaw which belonged to Cedric Morris. The earliest of these from 1958 was in stone followed by a series in bronzes of 1971 one of which is in the collection of the Castle Museum. Sir Cedric Morris (1889-1892) moved to Suffolk in 1929 and established the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at nearby Dedham in Essex. A bronze bust of Cedric Morris by Bernard Reynolds from 1973 is Inv 1995.95.1:F in store at Norwich Castle Museum

Barbara Franc parrot recycled art

The Macaws are all made with a wire armature onto which it's soldered​ coloured tin. The colour is from recycled decorative biscuit tins etc which are cut to shape, the edges sanded and then soldered into place to suggest the feathers of these colourful birds.

The majority are to be hung from the wall and are approximately lifesize with the average length from beak to tip of tail of 110cm.​

The Hong Kong Arts Development Council (ADC) presented the works of local artists Amy Cheung, Map Office (Laurent Gutierrez + Valérie Portefaix) and Hiram To at the world renowned visual arts exhibition – the 52nd International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia. This is the fourth time for Hong Kong visual artists to exhibit their works in this international event under the banner of "Hong Kong, China".

 

Map Office presents "Concrete Jungle / Parrot's Tale", an oyster shells built island with talking parrots peppering visitors with humorous, critical questions.
